Backyard Fire Pit Design- Outdoor Family Fun

Backyard fire pits are wonderfully family fun, can be built on a small budget and are fairly simple to build.

It just takes a bit of planning, gathering the right materials, and then some time to do the physical labor. Soon, your backyard firepit will be ready to go, providing hours of leisure time, enjoying good company around a nice backyard fire of your own.

To start, you need to select the exact location of your fire pit. Make sure you adhere to any local ordinances about having a fire in your yard, and how far away from building structures the fire pit needs to be. Make sure you’re away from fences and over head tree branches or plants that might lean over and catch fire.

You’ll want to make sure that you make the fire pit is large enough. Most good fire pits are at least four feet in diameter and 6-7 inches deep. The center of the pit is usually elevated a bit where kindling is place and the fire started. The inside perimeter is a little lower level ‘ring’ around that, where larger pieces of wood are placed as the fire grows.

The edge of a backyard fire pit is usually lined with heavy, thick, fire-proof items such as bricks, cement bricks, or cinder blocks. Some people use rocks, but be careful: water inside the rocks can cause them to burst if they get too hot creating a hazard. Often, backyard fire pits are then filled in with concrete or some other fire proof base. Make sure you have permission to do this.

Wherever and however you choose to construct your backyard fire pit, the potential for enjoyment and making memories with friends and family abounds. Don’t forget to have lots of hotdogs and marsh mellows on hand at all times.
